Jason talks to Zap2it about his upcoming show “The Event”. He stars on the show as “Sean Walker” and the show premieres tonight, so make sure to watch it!

Zap2it: How much more of a handle do you have on what’s happening?
Jason Ritter: I have much more of a handle on it than I did during the pilot. We’ve really come a long way from there. They don’t seem to be scared of forward momentum at all. [laughs] … So we’re in a completely different place. But every time I think, “OK, I know where this show is going,” they pull the rug out from underneath me. At the end of [episode seven], which I just got, I’m totally intrigued anew by another interesting thing.

On a show like this, do you like to know what’s coming or would you just rather react to the scripts as you get them?
There’s a part of me that just wants to know everything, but then there’s this other part of me that really enjoys being surprised. One thing that would be great — there’s no possible way to do this, but if they were to let me know every single flashback scene I was going to do over the course of the season so I knew my character’s entire back story … that would be great. But that’s impossible. … Generally I like not knowing because that’s what’s happening in our lives. We don’t necessarily know what’s coming next, and things are more surprising that way. It’s just fun. It’s like not opening all your presents in one go on your birthday.

Have the writers given you any kind of heads-up for important things happening to the character?
Yeah. For instance, I’ve always had an understanding of what my character’s home life was like. Now there’s an episode coming up where you’ll actually get to see him in the house where he grew up, so that’s really exciting. There are specifics in that scene that I wasn’t aware of, but I knew the general situation. So they have taken care of us in that they’ve given us enough general information so we’re not meeting someone and not knowing [if] we’ve ever met them before, then having a flashback where they babysat us for 18 years.

Here’s a new article from Daemons TV about Jason and his upcoming series “The Event”.

Few new shows are getting more buzz this fall than NBC’s THE EVENT. The conspiracy thriller will follow an unlikely hero who finds himself entangled in a huge cover-up as he investigates the disappearance of his girlfriend. Daemon’s TV was there when stars Jason Ritter (Sean Walker) and Blair Underwood (President Elias Martinez) talked to the press about the show and their characters. The actors were very careful with their responses, so there are no real spoilers.

On describing the show

When asked what the make-up of the show was in terms of political conspiracy versus science fiction, Jason and Blair agreed that so far each episode (they are shooting the sixth now) has been 95% political conspiracy and action and 5% science fiction. Jason stressed that the vast majority of the show takes place in the world we live in with just a small fantastical element to keep it interesting.

When asked if there is any humor in the show, Jason replied there is and that while it’s hard to make running funny, there is levity in the flashbacks and when a lot of information is being imparted.

On having a plan

Noting that people have reason to be gun-shy about big mythology shows and that NBC is also acutely aware of that, Blair mentioned several times during the call that the producers have a plan. He said that there is actually a five year plan and that the first and second seasons are especially well plotted out.

Blair remarked that having a plan is much rarer than we might expect and that The Event is unique in the sense that everyone knows where the show is going.

On what sets The Event apart from the Heroes, Lost, V, FlashForward pack

Jason explained that the producers have seen where shows have succeeded and where fans have been left wanting more. He said that NBC has also seen this and while they were ready for a show like The Event, they wanted to make sure it had enough back story and luckily, creator Nick Wauters had been brewing the idea for The Event for four years and had plenty of back story.

Another interview with the amazing Jason from Spinoff Online. Read a part of it below!

Spinoff Online: I see from your character bio that Sean is an avid gamer and has read Stephen King’s The Stand seven times. Are you as geeky as Sean?

Jason Ritter: It’s funny because I do play video games and computer games, too, but World of Warcraft is one of the only ones that I haven’t broken into yet, frankly because I’m nervous. The only thing that stops me from playing a video game is when I finish it. For World of Warcraft, it seems that you can carry on and keep finding new quests until the end of time, so I’m a little nervous about that one. But I certainly know what it’s like to watch the sunrise playing video games so I think that’s why Leila [Sarah Roemer] made him quit.

But The Stand, yeah, I’ve read The Stand. I grew up reading Stephen King. They’re fun things to read, especially under the covers with the flashlight. I used to really freak myself out [laughs].

It’s funny, those things I just read online. That wasn’t a character thing that they told me before we shot the pilot. They had a lot of things to tell us but not those specifically.

Jack from 24 and even Jack from Lost were pretty standard leading men for big action vehicles. You get to play an MIT grad that programs video games and used to swim for the varsity team. Safe to say, Sean Walker is a different type of leading man?

Absolutely. And that’s what got me so excited about the part. I read the script and not only was it so exciting but it wasn’t some beefcake who knows martial arts, some guy that has a couple of special skills in his back pocket. He’s smart and he’s good at assessing situations and that has gotten him out of some hairy situations but, yeah, that was what I loved about it. He’s not some regular hero. He spends more time thinking about being a hero or controlling one safely using a controller on his TV screen. But now he’s forced to do it. That was something that I really loved. To have Sean terrified and out of his element adds another dimension to the character rather than him squinting and looking into the camera and saying things like, “It’s just another day in paradise” or “We’ve been down this road before.”
And he’s not so super-comfortable with a gun, either. He’ll do it whatever it takes to get his girlfriend back and he’s motivated by that, but he’s like us. He’s a regular guy.
